What is Attendance Allowance? | Eligibility Requirements & How to Claim

If you have limited mobility or a disability, you may be entitled to a range of benefits in the UK. However, knowing which benefits you qualify for and how to apply for them can be a confusing topic – so at Surewise.com, we aim to provide as much information as possible to help protect and inform our customers against the unexpected.

Below, we’ve taken a look at Attendance Allowance, and why you might be eligible for this benefit.

What is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is a state benefit for people aged 65 or over who may need additional help around the home due to severe disability.

How Much Might I be Entitled to?

Attendance Allowance is paid at two different rates depending on the level of care you depend on.

You could be entitled to:

  • £55.65 per week if you need help either in the day or at night
  • £83.10 per week if you need help in the day and night

Other benefits you may be eligible for may also increase if you receive Attendance Allowance.

How Would I Be Paid?

As with most benefits, you would be paid your Attendance Allowance into your bank account. You will be able to provide these details when filling out your application form (see below).

Am I Eligible for Attendance Allowance?

To be eligible to claim, you will need to meet the following criteria below:

  • You require help with personal care or supervision
  • Aged 65 or over
  • You have a disability, illness or mental health issue
  • You have required help for at least 6 months prior to claiming

If you are under 65 but meet all other criteria, you may be eligible for Personal Independence Payment instead.

To be eligible for Attendance Allowance you must also be in Great Britain when claiming (with a few exceptions), be habitually resident in the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, and have been in Great Britain for at least 2 of the last 3 years.

How Do I Claim?

To claim for Attendance Allowance you can either:

  • Download an application form on Gov.UK
  • Call the Attendance Allowance helpline on 0800 731 0122

When filling in the form, be sure to be very clear about your illness or disability and how it affects your life. You will also need to attach any supporting information regarding your disability, such as doctors letters and care plans.
