It’s been one year since we launched the Safer Mobility Campaign – and what a year it’s been.
What began as our response to the rising number of road collisions involving mobility scooter users has grown into a national movement, championing safety, inclusion and awareness across the UK.
From distributing thousands of safety packs to forming powerful partnerships and influencing national policy conversations, we’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved.
Here’s a look back at some of the key moments from the past 12 months.
Over 8,500 Free Safety Packs and Sticker Bundles Distributed
Since the campaign began, we’ve sent out thousands of reflective sticker bundles and safety information packs to supporters across the UK. These free resources are designed to make mobility scooter users more visible and better informed about staying safe on the road and pavement.
You don’t need to be a Surewise customer to receive one. If you or someone you know would benefit from a pack, you can request one below:
Building Powerful Partnerships
We’ve built meaningful relationships with:
- Professor Duncan Guest and the team at Nottingham Trent University
- Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership
- More than 25 road safety partnerships across the UK
Together, we’ve raised awareness, shared resources and reached new audiences with our message. This collaborative approach is at the heart of the campaign – and there’s much more to come.
Calling For Changes to the Highway Code
In January 2025, we took an important step forward by publicly calling for mobility scooter users to be added to the Highway Code alongside other vulnerable road users.
This call came in response to a stark rise in mobility scooter user fatalities in 2023 – which nearly doubled compared to the previous year. We believe it’s time their safety was given the attention it deserves.
Dawn West’s Legacy of Safety
One of the most powerful voices of the campaign came from Dawn West, a mobility scooter user who courageously shared her lived experience of navigating daily hazards.
Dawn sadly passed away earlier this year, but her message continues through her family – who remain strong supporters of the campaign and are determined to keep her voice heard. Read more about Dawn’s legacy:
National Workshops and Webinars
The campaign has also reached key professional audiences through national events, including:
- A Road Safety GB webinar with Professor Duncan Guest
- A workshop at the National Road Safety Conference 2024
Both sessions received outstanding engagement from professionals, showing how seriously this issue is now being taken within the road safety community.
Media Coverage
Our message has reached millions through national and regional press coverage. Highlights include features in:
BBC News, BBC Look North, Highways News, World Highways, Birmingham Live, and STV.
This widespread visibility has helped highlight the importance of mobility scooter safety on a much broader stage.
Looking Ahead: May 2025 and Beyond
We’re preparing to take part in another national webinar in May, alongside Professor Guest and other leading figures in road safety. Together, we’ll be exploring how we can work more closely across sectors to improve safety outcomes for mobility scooter users.
We’re also continuing to engage with the Department for Transport and are proud to be working with the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) to ensure these issues remain firmly on the agenda.
Hi-vis Competition Winners
Throughout the year, we’ve given away 100 high-visibility jackets to help mobility scooter users feel safer and more confident. We hope they’re making a difference to those wearing them – and sending a clear message that visibility saves lives.
Want To Get Involved?
If you’ve been involved in a collision while using a mobility scooter – or if you have a story to share about the challenges you’ve faced on roads or pavements – we’d love to hear from you.
Your experience can help raise awareness, challenge stigma and contribute to creating safer, more inclusive streets for everyone.
